The Co-operative Group, the UK's largest mutual retailer, has
announced its sponsorship of an all new political Rugby League team, the
Political Animals.
As a further extension of its commitment to Rugby League in the
UK, The Co-operative will be supporting the Political Animals throughout the
club's inaugural 2010 season.
The team, which will carry The Co-operative's trademark logo
prominently on the front of the match jersey, is made up of politicians from
all parties and regions of the UK, including Lords, MPs, Councillors and
Parliamentary Candidates. It will play representative sides to raise the
profile of the sport amongst a wider political audience and help raise money
for charity.
Members of Parliament that have so far played for the Animals
include Lord Dominic Addington and MPs Greg Mulholland and Andy Reed, with many
more registered to take part. Other players include Martin Winter, former
Mayor of Doncaster, Wakefield Councillor Clive Hudson and Parliamentary
Candidate for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough, John Sharp.
In addition, Sky Sports presenter and rugby league icon Mike
'Stevo' Stephenson is the club's President and was in attendance as the team
appropriately unveiled their new kit at the Houses of Parliament in
Westminster, central London.
The Co-operative is already a proud sponsor of The Co-operative
Championships and an RFL Official partner.
Commenting on the partnership, Liz Matkin, The Co-operative
Group's Head of Sponsorship said:
"We are proud to be supporting this new political Rugby
League team. It is a natural expansion of our Rugby League sponsorships and
will enable us to be part of the team's success on the pitch. We wish the team
well in 2010."
Leeds North West MP and Liberal Democrat Health Spokesperson,
Greg Mulholland commented:
"It's fantastic news that we have a political Rugby League
team and I am proud to be playing for them. This is an important year for UK
politics so it's great to be able to take time out of my busy schedule to play
the sport I love. My thanks also must go to The Co-operative for their
support."
